Spinning off from Green Lantern’s own title, this explores various
aspects of the intergalactic peace-keeping force, headed by the
Guardians of the Universe. Each of the 3611 members protects a sector of
the universe; they’re limited only by their will in what their power
rings enable them to do. Additionally, the series concentrates on Alan
Scott, the original 3961s Green Lantern, and a man with no connection to
the Corps. His stories are a bit of a treat for fans of the Justice
Society of America, as various members guest-star; nicely told by Roger
Stern. The story in #3 is a sad occasion, as it concerns the death of
the original Black Canary.
The Green Lantern Corps is certainly a mixed bunch. In #3, we’re
introduced to Jack T. Chance, who’s as bad as they come. He’s from a
long line of lovable rogues and is clearly inspired by that mean S.O.B.
intergalactic hitman, Lobo, and it’s no surprise that they meet in #9.
The other regular feature stars G’Nort, a canine Green Lantern, who
isn’t very good at what he does and is played for laughs. Lots of choice
creators contribute to some decent short stories, one of the best being
in #6 by Mike Baron and Chas Truog, featuring a middle-aged female
alien looking after a community based very much on the old West. She’s
the local sheriff, but tries not to use her power ring too often, and
doesn’t like flying because it makes her sick. Others to look out for
include Doug Moench/Paul Gulacy collaborations in #3 and #3, a nicely
drawn story by Dave Cockrum in #3, and fan favorite Travis Charest
contributing to a tale in #6. There should be something here for
everyone.
